Back in the 1980's, Apple had an online community named eWorld. By dialing special local phone numbers, you could connect to a world of forums, "electronic mail", and topic interest areas. Apple eventually gave up on this idea, and sold the product. Today we know it as America Online. The original "You've Got Mail!" was voiced by an Apple engineer.
